The town of Abbadia is the nearest to the summit of Mount Amiata , it is now one of the most famous tourist centers in the area. “Nature formed a small valley, surrounded by harsh cliffs. The ancients built a village , well defended by a moat full of flowing water”. Thus, the place is described in “ The commentaries of Pius II”. If you arrive by the Cassia Road, the first impression of Abbadia is that of a modern village, characterized by wide avenues with trees. Things change when you enter the medieval center located immediately under the impressive Cathedral, one of the most important places in Tuscan medieval history. The ancient village surrounded by walls is formed by three main roads, that are more or less parallel. Here you can find the church of the Holy Cross ( originally dated 1221, but rebuilt after a fire in 1800)and the church of Sant’Angelo (dated 1313, but now a private home). The Mayor’s Palace, the People’s Palace, and other medieval buildings that make up most of the center of the village are also quite interesting. Part of the village outside the first row of walls, maintains a partially ancient look. Here you can visit the ancient church of Saint Leonard dated XIII century.
