20 - Come Benedetto manda Mauro in Francia e Placido in Sicilia
Artist: Riccio
Current location: Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore
Original location: Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION
This is perhaps the most modest of all those frescoes of the cloister and the only one made by Bartolomeo Neroni, Riccio said. On the right panel inscription recalls the view here taken by Charles V in 1536.
In this scene there are many important figures: St. Benedict the center, beside him the figure of the King of France, whose face is a portrait of the same Riccio. Then there is Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael, with his hat on the right. Blessed is the one behind San Luca Signorelli while the one in front is Lorenzo the Magnificent. In the background a view of Rome: a bow and riders who break giving strength to the main scene. The protagonists are two young Romans of the scene, and Mauro Placido, who follow St. Benedict becoming monks.
