The fountain was built by Grand Duke Ferdinando I de 'Medici in 1603 in front of the station building algrandioso Post to soppoerire to the needs of travelers. Of Mannerist style, just above the fountain shows a scroll that explains the reason for its construction. It is surmounted by statues of two angels in travertine supporting a large coat of arms doctor.
The fountain used water from the nearby spring Fonte Grande, scale specially with a duct provided.
In the back of the fountain there are two small wash to ensure the services of the Mail Station.
